History
War Machine and his good friend Iron Man were part of a team assembled by S.H.I.E.L.D. to take down Spider-Man, who had gone on a large scale killing spree as a result of being bonded to an alien symbiote which took over his mind. War Machine was killed by Spider-Man in the fight, but Iron Man avenged his death and was the one who finished Spider-Man off in anger.
